Clouds continued to move in, and as the afternoon progressed, it was clear that it was snowing out in the distance. I picked up my bear can, set up my tent out in the growing tent city, and hung out with hikers for the rest of the evening. ![]() Grumpy Bear’s, which has a small bar and restaurant, and a large space for hikers to tent, is a small patch of civilization in the middle of nowhere.īoth Cannon and Sassy K made it the full 33.5 miles from Spanish Needle Creek to Kennedy Meadows (plus another 2.5 miles of roadwalk to Grumpy Bears), making it to the trail register at 1 am. The desert is behind, the high mountains ahead.Īfter getting a burger at the general store at Kennedy Meadows, I got a ride to Grumpy Bear’s Retreat, which is where my bear canister was waiting. And while it still looks a bit dry out there, for the first time, I feel like I’m truly surrounded on all sides by pine forests. Kennedy Meadows marks the exit from the desert and entrance to the high mountain peaks of the Sierra Nevada.
